Bio

Dealing in the dark art of danger pop is a tricky business, and one that pays in quarterly installments of wadded up one dollar bills.

There's a grey area somewhere between accessibility and feedback, between melody and a mess. Spidermums have drawn maps of that place, full of sea monsters and mermaids.

They cuddle up for warmth there, waiting for the ice age of corporate rock, noise metal, and kiddie pop to pass, as george harrison has promised it will.

Spidermums pass time playing feedback drenched melodic guitar rock in their cave: located in the central section of the united states, conveniently out of the reach of hipster trend makers.

Spidermums is a new shoegazy indie rock band made up of former members of Bodisartha, The Girl is a Ghost, Grass Canon, and Pixel Panda.

After several years of playing in Kansas City bands, the members of Spidermums got together in a somewhat unusual way.  Before a Bodisartha show at the Replay Lounge in Lawrence, KS in 2007, James Capps (The Girl is a Ghost - drummer, Pixel Panda - guitar) was talking to Josh Thomas (Bodisartha - vocals/guitar, GrassCanon - Bass) and Justin Piatt (Bodisartha - drums/vocals, GrassCanon - drums) about his infatuation with early 90's rap, mostly Tupac and Biggie.  James was thinking about trying his hand at rap and Josh had a studio in his basement.

That was when they realized they only lived a few minutes from each other.  While they were recording the rap project, James heard some demos of songs from the most recent Bodisartha album, Leave the Poor People Alone.  Around this time, Bodisartha lost a guitar player, but James was able to help out Bodisartha and tour with them since The Girl is a Ghost had just broken up.  He went on a trip to Austin, TX with Bodisartha in late 2007, playing the last ten shows of the year for them and recording guitar parts on the Justin Mantooth recorded studio version of Leave the Poor People Alone (being released in Summer '08).

After Bodisartha lost its fourth bass player in two years, Josh, James, and Piatt decided to start a new band with a different sound.  Spidermums existed for almost one week as a three piece: two guitars and drums -  no bass player.  With all the pedals Josh and James use, including octave pedals to make bass-like tones on guitar, it was possible to get away with some low end absence.  But at a Peerless Princess of the Plains show at, once again, the Replay Lounge, as Josh was telling James' friend Trevis Stewart that they were going out as a three piece and they were excited about the novelty of not having a bass player, Trevis decided he wanted to ruin everything and join the band.  But it seems to have worked out in spite of Trevis' best efforts.  His sense of melody on bass adds a dimension Piatt, James, and Josh weren't even aware they were missing.  They immediately started putting together a self titled EP at Josh's home studio.

For the moment, ambition has beaten out procrastination and Spidermums has booked a 14 day tour of the northeastern united states. if you are reading this, that means we are coming to your city on this tour in late April/early May.

We're very interested in being written about in your publication (cd review, show preview, interview, etc...). If you'd like an interview or any more information about our band, please call Josh at 816.522.2133 or email Josh and James at press (at) spidermums.com.
